Rising unemployment in India: A major concern

Youth unemployment in India is high, at 23.3%. Women’s unemployment is also high, at 8.3%.

According to the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE), the unemployment rate in India in July 2023 was 7.95%. This is a slight decrease from the previous month’s unemployment rate of 8.11%. However, the unemployment rate is still higher than it was a year ago, when it was 7.14%.

The unemployment rate in India has been rising in recent years. This is due to a number of factors, including the COVID-19 pandemic, the war in Ukraine, and the global economic slowdown.

The unemployment rate is particularly high among young people and women. The CMIE data shows that the unemployment rate among youth (aged 15-24) in July 2023 was 23.3%. The unemployment rate among women was 8.3%.

The high unemployment rate in India is a serious problem. It is leading to social and economic unrest. It is also preventing India from reaching its full economic potential.

The Indian government is taking a number of steps to try to address the problem of unemployment. These steps include:

  • Investing in education and skill development
  • Promoting entrepreneurship and small businesses
  • Creating jobs in the public sector

However, more needs to be done to address the problem of unemployment in India. The government needs to invest more in job creation and in the development of the private sector.
